When should we stop the tutoring?
The student has improved dramatically, and is understanding the subject better than ever.
The next question our tutor gets in this situation, is "When should we stop the tutoring?"

Our tutor's answers depend on a number of factors. In many cases, we encourage a tutoring holiday so that the student can try to go it alone with the freshly learned skills from the tutoring sessions. There are some times when it is generally unwise to do this: towards the end of the semester when projects come due and exams loom closer. We tend to recommend that students stick with their tutor through exams if they are within a month or two from the end of the semester. There are exceptions to this of course, but the key is that we don't want to undo all the great work that has been done by setting the student adrift during a critical time of the semester.

A great time to "go it alone" is at the beginning of the semester when things are moving more slowly, and the student has time to catch up if he/she falls behind. Parents need to beware of recognizing there is a problem too late--checking in with your child at least every other week is wise. If you have already been through a mad-catch up at the end of the semester, then you know exactly what we are talking about! It is always easier to maintain than it is to catch up.
