How Our Study Skills Tutors can help

How a Tutor Can Improve Study Skills and Organization

I meet with many students who are struggling because they are not organized and they do not know how to study for tests. This is often a problem that causes students to under-perform or perform erratically. Parents tell me, "I just don't think he knows how to study." They also say, "She is very disorganized, has no study skills, and she won't let me help her."

Expert tutors in study skills and organization

This is why our tutors, in addition to helping with subject areas like algebra, geometry, chemistry, biology, physics, writing and Spanish, also are expert at helping students find an organizational system that works for them. Some of the benefit of having a one on one tutor comes from regular, structured time with a tutor who helps lay out a plan to get things done. The student sees techniques and approaches in the session, and then can start to apply it in other subjects and on other assignments when the tutor is not present.

Tutors that use a customized approach get best results

The key to study skills and organization tutoring is a customized approach. I talked to one parent who had learned of a study skills program, including a workbook and a separate curriculum, that a tutoring company was offering. It was a preset program that was the same for every student. The parent told me, "I don't want a program, I want a tutor to help my son figure out what works for him." And that is the approach we take. No two students are the same, so the approaches and solutions our tutors come up with are different. Naturally, there are some general common themes in all the approaches, and our tutors are well versed in those as well. But each student gets the benefit of a tutor working one on one to develop an organizational system and study habits that fit that student's needs, personality, and learning style.

Tutors use a two-tiered approach to Study Skills

Our tutors use a two-tiered approach: our tutors work to find the customized approach to study skills and give explanations, practice, and conceptual help in specific subject areas. With this two-tiered approach to study skills tutoring, the student is bound to show rapid progress, and the beauty of the study skills and organization is that they are skills students will be able to use for the rest of their lives.
