SAT Subject Tests

In addition to either the SAT or the ACT, most students also take SAT Subject Tests, otherwise known as the “SAT 2s.” These tests are designed to test subject area knowledge in high school curriculum areas. Subjects tested include Math (two levels), Biology, Chemistry, Physics, World History, US History, Literature, and nine Foreign Languages.

Who Needs to take Subject Tests?

This depends on where you are applying to school. The California State system does not require subject tests. The University of California will no longer require SAT subject tests starting in 2011, but taking two or more tests is recommended for certain degree programs and by certain campuses. Private schools vary: The University of Southern California does not require tests, but they “suggest” taking them. Stanford University “strongly recommends” submitting at least two subject test scores. A good rule of thumb is to plan on taking two tests, and possibly a third if you are applying to elite private schools.

Preparing for SAT Subject Tests

The SAT subject tests are similar to a comprehensive final exam in the subject. So it is definitely advisable to take some time to prepare. One way to get a leg up is to take the test in the spring of the year you are completing the class (don't wait for a summer to go by - the sun will bleach the info out of your brain!). Another tip is to pick up a guide book on the subject. If you are having trouble, you can enlist the help of a private tutor. Our home tutors are very good at preparing students for the SAT subject tests.

Where do I Find Admissions Requirements?

Requirements for application to universities can be found on the Admissions page of university websites. Look for a link to “Incoming Freshman” as opposed to “Transfer Students.” The requirements are usually different for transferring students.
