Tutor Applicant FAQ

Am I an employee or a contractor?
Our tutors work as independent contractors. This means you are not an employee of A+ Home Tutors. When you are paid, we do not withhold taxes. At the end of the year, we send you and the IRS a 1099MISC, which lists your tutoring income for the year. It is your responsibility to pay taxes on your income. As a contractor, you can also expense your mileage and other tutoring related expenses against your income. Contact a tax expert for more information on this topic.

Am I compensated for driving time and gas?
No. You are paid for the time you spend tutoring the student. We tell you where the student lives so you can determine if the location works for you. Note that you can expense your mileage/gas on your tax return (talk to a tax expert for more information).

Is this a full time position?
Not usually. Most tutors work from 2-15 hours per week. Most tutoring happens between the hours of 3 PM and 9 PM during the week, and on the weekends.

What happens if I turn down a tutoring assignment?
We find another tutor to fill the assignment and we will keep you in mind for future assignments. There is no penalty for turning down a student.

How do I get paid?
You report your hours to us through our online web system, and you receive two checks per month.

Do I have to collect payment for the tutoring?
No. We handle all billing and client payments so that you can focus on what you do best: tutoring. If a parent asks you a billing question, you can refer them to your manager.

How does scheduling with the student work?
You contact the family directly and work out the session times. If your schedule does not work, we will find another tutor and keep you in mind for future assignments.

Do I get training?
You will be oriented to our online system and how our program works. We treat you as a professional, and we allow you to use all of your strategies, skills and experience to help the student improve. If you need help with a specific student, you can call us and we will be happy to support you.

Do I follow your curriculum/a set curriculum?
No. We do not have a set curriculum, and this is by design. We will provide you with a tutoring plan that spells out the objectives of the tutoring. Our philosophy is to let professional tutors tailor tutoring sessions to the specific needs of each student. In most cases, you will follow the school curriculum and use the materials provided by the school. You are encouraged to introduce supplemental materials if you feel these materials would be helpful to the student. If you need support, our team can help.
