The A+ Home Tutors Team

Brian Cheek, Founder and President

I founded A+ Home Tutors in 2004 because I realized that parents were having trouble finding qualified, experienced tutors. In my early experience as a tutor, I realized that forming a bond with my students was a very important factor to the tutoring success. Parents would tell me that their student enjoyed sessions with me, and that after only a few sessions they could tell a difference. Once I had the student’s trust, I could help them achieve breakthroughs in the subject matter, and the higher grades were never far behind. Generating rapport and trust with students became the cornerstone of our tutoring philosophy at A+ Home Tutors, and we still emphasize that today.

I first learned I had a passion for one on one teaching when I was a classroom teacher. I taught for six years overall, and quickly learned that I loved helping students one on one, taking students aside to show them something, talking with a student or two after class. When I was offered a position as a guidance counselor, I jumped at the chance, and was able to help students with their emotional issues along with their academics. Along the way I coached lacrosse and basketball teams, again thriving on the frequent opportunities to watch individual students grow and reach their potential.

A+ Home Tutors has been formulated around the idea that a caring tutor who can make a connection can help any student reach his or her goals. We work hard to find those tutors who are not only gifted instructors, but who can spark a student’s interest and keep things interesting and fun for a student. I know from my experience that this is the most powerful way to help a child.

Melissa Funk, Recruiting Coordinator and Matching Assistant

I began working for A+ Home Tutors back in July of 2010, and have enjoyed every minute of it. I have learned so much about the great tutoring philosophies of A+ Home Tutors. I have been able to apply my skills in communication, organizational, and persistence to help A+ Home Tutors grow. I enjoy being able to contribute to the success and happiness of the students and families we serve.

I graduated from San Francisco State University with a BA in Photojournalism, and have worked at a few independent companies ranging from a record label to a lifestyle magazine. I really enjoy working with these types of independent companies because I get to see all the components of a business, as well as help them grow. A+ Home Tutors is a company I love working for because I get to speak daily with both tutors and parents, and help young people reach their full potential.

About Us

It’s Worth Every Penny!

“I have been blown away by the progress my daughter has made with Maria from A+ Home Tutors.
In 2 months, her grade in math has gone up 2 full letter grades, and her overall grade point average has gone up 1.6 points. I had high expectations when I started using the service; A+ Home Tutors has met all of them and then some. It has been worth every penny.”

We Are Delighted--Fs to Cs and Bs, and the sky is the limit!

“My son brought home some Cs in a few of his honors classes (the first time ever!), and he seemed a bit overwhelmed with his classes. Brian matched our son with Mike, who worked with him on creating and implementing an organizational strategy in addition to helping him with his school work. Now, our son has a 3.7 grade point average, and we are considering stopping the tutoring because we feel he can succeed on his own. Now that is success! WE are very happy, and we would recommend A+ Home Tutors to anyone looking for a great tutor.”
