Orange County Charter Schools to be approved at state level

In Orange County, Charter Schools have traditionally been approved at the local school board level. That may change as a result of a new law that would put this power in the hands of the State government. Local officials are enraged by this new law, saying it is not only inefficient, but students stand to lose when an ill-advised charter school fails after a couple of years.

Orange County currently has 27 charter schools which have been approved by the local school districts. Proponents of keeping the system as is point out the local school boards know the needs of their students and have the best perspective on which charter schools will be successful and which are likely to struggle.

Orange County is already gathering together opposition for the bill, and they plan to formally protest it. If it is approved, the law goes into effect July 1.

Increase in home tutoring, catch up time

With more students falling behind as schools do not meet their needs, more parents will need to find ways to get their children caught up again: home tutoring, summer school (if it is offered) and home study with parents. This puts more strain on families' time and budgets.
